Bird nests and fire prevention

As part of the tidy up leading into the fire season keep an eye out for nests in shrubs near the house. One of the worst from a fine fuel point of view are the blackbirds.

If you are working on your fire prevention make sure you don’t have shrubs within 2m of your windows. If there is a fire and the shrubs catch alight, the windows may crack and let the fire inside.

Some birds haven’t finished nesting yet so don’t be too hasty in removing nests. We still have a New Holland Honeyeater in a tree fern and a Restless Flycatcher was observed collecting nest lining material on the weekend.
