What is happening to our faunal emblem?

There has been a fair bit of coverage about the Leadbeater’s Possum, Victoria’s faunal emblem lately. The 2009 fires had a big impact on their habitat and many people are worried that we may lose this special animal.  A Leadbeater’s Possum Advisory Group has been established and met for the first time in June 2013.

At stakeholder forums held on 30 September and 1 October a set of recommended actions will be developed. Public submissions are welcome and will also be considered in the development of future actions.

Although the possum is not found in our area you may be interested in hearing about how surveys are carried out, some of the results and the biology of the Leadbeater’s Possum. There are presentations by Lindy Lumsden, David Lindenmayer and others at the Department of Environment & Primary Industries website.
