Have you heard enough about cricket lately? Here is a new angle. We were sent a photo this week of an interesting insect found in a Melbourne backyard. It is a mole cricket and found throughout Australia.
Most of you will have seen the shiny black crickets and been driven made by the constant chirping. The mole cricket has a persistent call as well but is brown and it is the front legs that are interesting with their special shape designed for digging. The Australian Museum site has more detailed information about the mole cricket including how the females of the blue “ant” use mole crickets as hosts for their larvae.
